"VANITY FAIR" INTERVIEW WITH ZADIE SMITH

"VANITY FAIR"  interviewED  ZADIE SMITH in December. I had my own answers.

Q: What historical figure do you most identify with?

A: For those of you who read my first novel, THE PROVIDER, (and it makes sense that it would be my first), I answered, My mother. No surprises for you who have also read this novel. Interestingly, I hadn't consciously known it until I read the VF question.

Q: What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

A: indifference. I also deplore it in others.

Q: What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

A. Truthfulness at the expense of kindness.

Q: Which talent would you most like to have?

A: Speed reading. (Same for Zadie)

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?

A: Getting to the university (Same for Zadie)

Q: What is the quality you most like in a man?

A: Kindness (Same for Zadie)

Q: What is your motto?

A: "Everything is harder than you think, and everything takes longer than you think."
