PHILIP ROTH WINS THE NOBEL PRIZE

October 11, 2013

Last year I discovered Philip Roth. Last year! I was so steeped in reading the classics, returning to them again and again after  so many disappointments with contemporary writing, that I somehow thought Roth was just another contemporary writer.  Finally I decided to try him. I went to Google, checked his books  for reviews, and read that AMERICAN PASTORAL was his masterpiece. (“Masterpiece” is a word generously given to Henry James for every one of his writings. So I was cautious of the word, but okay, it’s the best I’ve got to work with.)  I purchased AMERICAN PASTORAL. After I  read it, I read seven more of his books, and am still at it. I’m sure this is the case with most readers: they can’t get enough, and trying someone else only serves to have us running back to him.  By the way, I believe that AMERICAN PASTORAL, is, indeed, his masterpiece.
