The Writer with a Voice is a Master of Tone

September 28, 2011

Are you a master of tone?

If I haven’t driven you crazy on Fiction Writers Guild and Talking Fiction with the following discussion, "What is voice? Not everyone has it?" and you’re sitting snugly confident with your answer, then try to crack this nut: "What is tone?” If someone were to say to you, “You are a master of tone,”  would you know what that person was talking about?

Voice is a writer’s personality. Tone refers to the mood of a particular piece. Henry James was the master of tone. He wrote silence into conversation while the people were talking.
