OVERWRITING

November 16, 2011

I recently re-read a French classic by Honore de Balzac: Pere Gorgiot. Would you believe that I got tired of reading the death scene that went on for pages and pages? I thought, Die already.

I also recently read Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto. Beautiful writer. But the jump from one character to another for hundreds of pages made me restless until I said to myself, So where is this story going? It’s too late already. I’m getting tired of reading.

I consider myself a literary reader because quality language is important to me. But I find myself wanting the novels to end sooner. What is my problem?

Is it time for me to read fast plot action mysteries? To my recollection, the only page-turner I ever read was Seabiscuit. Loved it.

Maybe I’m just restless, waiting for the February release of my novel THE PROVIDER.
